TOBRAMYCIN
STERILE OPHTHALMIC SOLUTION AND OINTMENT
DESCRIPTION:
Tobramycin is a generic name, available in many trade names among these is Tobrex which is manufactured by Alcon a Novartis company. It is a sterile ophthalmic antibiotic formulation prepared specifically for topical therapy of external infections. This product is supplied in solution and ointment forms.
Each ml of solution contains Tobramycin 0.3% (3mg/ml), inactives and purified water and Benzalkonium chloride 0.01% as a preservative.
Each gram of ointment contains Tobramycin 0.3% (3mg/g), mineral oil, petrolatum base and chlorobutanol 0.5% as a preservative.
Tobramycin is a water soluble aminoglycoside antibiotic active against a wide variety of gram negative and gram positive ophthalmic pathogens.
CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY:
It is active against susceptible strains of the following microorganisms; Staphylococci, Streptococci, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabili, Haemophilus influenza and many others.
INDICATIONS:
it is used in the treatment of external infections of the eyes and its adnexa caused by susceptible bacteria. it is safe and effective for use in children.
CONTRAINDICATIONS:
- Hypersensitivity
ADVERSE REACTIONS:
- Localized ocular toxicity
- hypersensitivity
- lid itching and swelling
- conjunctival erythema
- it produces less adverse effects.
OVER-DOSAGE:
- Punctuate keratitis
- erythema
- increased lacrimation
- edema and lid itching
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION:
Solution:
- In mild to moderate disease, instill one or two drops into the affected eyes every four hours.
- In severe infections, instill two drops into eyes hourly until improvement.
Ointment:
- In mild to moderate disease, apply a 1.5 cm ribbon into the affected eyes two or three times per day.
- In severe infections, instill a 1.5 cm ribbon into the affected eyes every three to four hours until improvement.
